What to write in a baby shower card
Most baby shower card messages are two or three lines: congratulate the parents by name, say one warm or specific thing about them or the baby, and sign off with your name. There is no need to be clever — a short, sincere line is the one people keep. Below are fifteen messages to copy or adapt, sorted by tone, including ones written to the baby and ones for a coworker or a group card.
Short and simple
For signing a card at the door with ten seconds to spare.
Congratulations — the next chapter looks wonderful on you.
With love, [your name]
So happy for you both. Little [surname] is lucky already.
[your name]
Wishing you an easy last few weeks and a very happy hello.
Love, [your name]
Warm
For a close friend or family, where one real sentence beats three pretty ones.
[Name], you are going to be a brilliant parent.
I cannot wait to meet the person who has already made you this happy.
All my love, [your name]
Watching the two of you get ready for this has been a joy.
This baby is arriving into a great deal of love — ours included.
[your name]
Everything we love about the two of you,
somebody new is about to get to know.
Congratulations, and all our love — [your name]
Funny
Only if you know them well. Joke about the sleep, never about their body.
Congratulations on your last few weeks of uninterrupted sleep.
Use them wisely.
[your name]
Welcome to the club where everything is slightly sticky.
Membership is for life and the snacks are excellent.
Love, [your name]
You are about to meet your new favourite person
and your new least favourite alarm clock.
Congratulations! [your name]
Written to the baby
The card the parents keep, and usually the one they read out.
Dear little one,
you do not know it yet, but you are arriving into a family that has talked about you for months.
We cannot wait to meet you. — [your name]
To [baby's name, or 'the baby'],
your parents are two of our favourite people.
You have excellent taste already. — [your name]
Little one, here is our only advice:
be kind, laugh a lot, and let your parents sleep now and then.
Welcome to the world. [your name]
From a coworker, or on a group card
Short, kind and nothing personal — everybody who signs after you will read it.
Congratulations from everyone at [team or company].
We will miss you while you are away, and we are so happy for you.
Wishing you a healthy baby and a proper rest —
the inbox will still be here, and so will we.
[your name]
The whole team is thrilled for you.
Enjoy every minute, and send photos.
What it has to say, whichever you pick
- Their namesThe parents' names, or the baby's if one has been chosen and shared. A bare "Congratulations" reads like a card bought for somebody else.
- Something only you would sayOne specific line — a memory, something you admire about them — does more than any number of stock phrases.
- Your nameObvious, until it is a group card or a card taped to a gift and nobody can tell afterwards who it came from.
- What the money is for, if there is someA light line — "for the first takeaway after the baby arrives" — makes cash or a gift card read as a present rather than a transaction.
Questions
How long should a baby shower card message be?
Two or three lines is normal and plenty. The card is usually read at the shower or with the gifts, so a short, specific message lands better than a long one.
What should you not write in a baby shower card?
Anything about the pregnant person's body or size, birth plans, horror stories, parenting advice nobody asked for, or opinions about the baby's sex or name. Keep it to congratulations and warmth.
What do you write in a baby shower card for a coworker?
Something short, kind and not personal: congratulations, good wishes for the birth and the time off, and your name. On a group card keep it brief, because others are signing after you.
What do you write to an unborn baby in a card?
A short welcome — that people are waiting to meet them, something about their parents, and a wish for their life. Use the baby's name if the parents have shared one, and "little one" if not.
Is it okay to put money in a baby shower card?
Yes. Cash or a gift card is common, especially from guests not buying from the registry, and a line saying what it is for makes it read as a gift.
Somewhere to put it
If the shower has a page with messages switched on, the same words can go there too — a message left on a tinynewlife page stays at that address, where the parents can read it again once the baby is here rather than finding the card in a drawer. And if you are the one hosting, the whole page is free to build.
