Do you bring a gift to a gender reveal?

No, a gift is not expected at a gender reveal. It is not a baby shower — the shower is the event where gifts are the point, and it usually comes a couple of months later. Plenty of guests bring something small anyway, and that is welcome rather than required: flowers, something for the parents, or a card. If you are invited to both a reveal and a shower, keep the real gift for the shower.

Why a reveal is not a shower

The two are often confused because both are parties held during a pregnancy, but they do different jobs. A shower exists to equip a household before a baby arrives, and gifts are how it does that. A reveal exists for one piece of news, usually with a smaller and closer guest list. Arriving empty-handed at a shower is a misstep; arriving empty-handed at a reveal is normal.

A reveal usually happens somewhere between about 12 and 20 weeks, once a blood test or the anatomy scan has given the answer, and lasts an hour or two. A shower is usually around 28 to 32 weeks and is bigger and longer. When the two are combined into one party the invitation makes it obvious — a gift list link is the giveaway — and then it is a shower and gifts apply.

If you want to bring something

Bring something small that does not compete with a shower gift and that the parents will not have to find room for. A reveal gift is a gesture rather than a contribution.

Flowers or a plant are the safe answer. Something for the parents rather than the baby — good coffee, a treat for the partner who is not pregnant — is thoughtful, because the pregnancy is well looked after by everybody else. A card alone is genuinely enough, especially if you are going to the shower too. And avoid buying anything pink or blue before the answer is announced; it is a bet, and an awkward one to lose in front of the parents.

What to spend

If you bring anything, keep it well under what you would spend on a shower gift — a reveal gift that outshines the shower gift has the two events the wrong way round. Nobody is counting, and a card costs nothing that matters.

The one exception is when you cannot go to the shower. Then the reveal is the only event you are at, and bringing a proper baby gift makes sense.

How a host says no gifts

Say it once on the invitation, in plain words, at the end rather than the top: no gifts please, your company is the whole point. Short reads as hospitality, whereas a paragraph explaining the policy reads as a rule and makes guests who were never going to bring anything feel told off.

Saying nothing is the usual mistake, because it leaves half the guests guessing and arriving with something out of caution. And if you do have a gift list, link it rather than saying no gifts — the two together leave people unsure which one you meant.
